Scylla left the gym, went to his car, a red Chevy, drove into the western section of Princeton, passed Uncle Arky’s dark house, turned the corner, parked. In the backseat was a holster which he quickly strapped on. Alongside the holster was a wrapped Magnum. He put on a pair of thick gloves, unwrapped the gun, slipped it into its holster, grabbed his blazer, a strong flashlight, went outside, put the jacket on.
He walked to Uncle Arky’s house—the mailbox name read, as Perkins had told him, J.F. VAUGHAN. He moved into shadow by the house, waited a moment. Nothing moved. Then he did, quickly, picking the front door lock with no trouble, entering, turning on the flash. Not a terribly impressive living room. The house was a bungalow, on a decent-sized lot, not much character. He crossed to the basement steps, flashed the light ahead of him as he descended, found the laboratory with no trouble at all.
Christ—the bottles. In the center of the large room was an enormous desk and on it, at least a hundred identical glass bottles, all clear liquid inside, all with stoppers, all possessing similar labels. Scylla ran the light across them.
Each label was a typed color. There was “Blue” and “Thalo Blue.” “Amber” and “Burnt Umbre.” “Sandy.” “Yellow Ochre” and “Indian Yellow” alongside that. “Lavender,” “Turquoise.” “Gray” and “Lemon” and “Copper” and he was transfixed for the moment, or more than likely he would have been, had he not become instantly aware when the floor he stood on began to crackle, it was electrified, now there was light coming from beneath where he stood, he could feel heat, there was growing heat and the crackling sound increased and he was no beginner, he knew when he was trapped and surely he was that now.
